About Darjeeling

For the first impression of this place, the city of Darjeeling, in northeastern India, is 6710 meters above the sea level and is part of West Bengal. If you wish to know how to reach Darjeeling, the nearest airport is in Bagdogra and the nearest train station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP).

It might take you 3 hours to get to Darjeeling from both places by car. The main public transport to Darjeeling are private taxis (available from NJP and Bagdogra), shared taxis (available in NJP) and buses (at Siliguri station, 8 km from NJP). From the NJP station or the Bagdogra airport. You can also take the fascinating train to NJP or the train that connects Siliguri with Darjeeling and enjoy the panoramic view of the Himalayas for 7 hours.

NOTE: At Bagdogra airport, only private taxis are available. However, there are no shared cabs (unless you one book online), mini-buses or trains. Unlike Gangtok, there are no helicopter flights from Bagdogra to Darjeeling. You have to cross the road and take steep and winding mountain roads.

How To Get To Darjeeling

Gangtok (the capital of Sikkim) is just 4 hours by car from Darjeeling, and several other important destinations in Sikkim. Thus, a trip to Sikkim is an excellent way to combine Darjeeling easily.

The city of Darjeeling was founded in the mid-nineteenth century by the British as a sanatorium. Over the years, it has become famous for its aromatic tea, and for the Darjeeling railway, and of course, for tourism.

In Darjeeling, you will see many tea plantations producing the best tea in the world, as well as the amazing Toy Train, a technical marvel of the 1880s that could overcome the slopes and provide transportation.

About The People

The inhabitants are mainly Nepalese immigrants (mainly Gorkhas), Tibetans, as well as Lepchas and Bhutias from Sikkim. Nepalis are mainly Hindu, while Tibetans follow Buddhism. If you compare them with the lowlands, their appearance and culture are very different. It's a wonderful world there.

The center of Darjeeling is known as the shopping center or Chowrasta, an open public square, a pedestrian street surrounded by colorful shops with mountains and valleys. The shopping center or Chowrasta is the main center of the city.
