10 Must Visit Places In Thimphu Which Reflects The Heritage Of The City!

The pretty capital city of Bhutan, Thimphu has numerous attractions for all types of visitors. It is a hub of commerce, religion and government but Thimphu also has oodles of natural attractions to entice the travelers. The most noteworthy thing is co-existence of modern development with ancient traditions.



Major attractions in and around Thimphu

You can opt for a travel agency offering Thimphu tourism packages. However, ensure that the tour package covers the following attractions in the city.


Memorial Chorten-Made to pay homage to King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, the third monarch of Bhutan, the stupa was set up in 1974. The statues and paintings in the monument offer glimpse into Buddhist philosophy.

Institute for Zorig Chusum- It is known as the Arts & Crafts School and the Institute offers course on more than a dozen traditional arts and crafts in Bhutan. The tourists can see the students learning various skills here.


The Folk Heritage Museum-If you want to get an idea about the rich cultural heritage of Bhutan, visiting the museum in the capital city is recommended. A three storey mud and timber house is the major draw here. Of course, there are other exhibits in it too.


Trashichhoe dzong/ Tashichho Dzong- Tashichho Dzong is a massive Buddhist monastery as well as fortress situated on Wang chu river banks, on northern edge of the capital city. Inside the complex, there are 30 shrines, temples and buildings. Its origin is in 1641 and the latest form was made in 1965 by monarch Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. It contains office of the king and a nice rose garden.


Weekend Market-If you have plans of buying souvenirs for friends while exploring Thimphu, head to the weekend market of the city. It is held at the river Wang Chu banks. The incense products can be quite enticing.

Changangkha Lhakhang- The impressive fortress like temple Changangkha Lhakhang is a hub for pilgrims in Bhutan. The 12th century temple and monastic school located on a ridge above the capital, has a statue of Chenrezig with 11 heads. The interior murals look amazing.


Craft Bazaar –The Bhutanese Crafts Bazaar also called handicraft market of Thimphu is ideal if you want to get authentic handicrafts of the region. The miniature statues and crafts products are enticing. It remains closed on Sunday.


Other places of interest- Buddha Point (Kuensel Phodrang is a major sightseeing in Thimphu. offering amazing view of Thimphu Valley. Other notable attractions include the Simply Bhutan Museum and Bhutan textile museum.


There are many other attractions in the capital that are offered in Thimphu tourism packages. However, ensure your tour comprises of several days so that you can explore all of these properly.
